Getting to the last row...

Postby Ken on Wed Aug 22, 2007 7:34 pm

EDIT: To preserve the "keyboard shortcut/hotkey thread", I've snipped this response about how Strata deals with end rows here. Original thread here: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=525

As a long time Excel user, it would be nice to have some keyboard commands that are common to both Excel and most web browsers.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is definitely something we'd love to implement across the board. These keys currently do work in a few areas: the "Home" and "End" keys work when viewing webpages -- also, the "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys work when viewing webpages as well as tables.

There doesn't appear to be a way to go to the end row.

For tables that have been imported as well as some external tables (Xbase), Strata can determine the row count and allows the user to scroll to the bottom and top of the table immediately (as described above, your suggestion for hotkeys would be nice here). There are certain tables, however, where this is not the case -- namely, text-delimited files. This limitation is due to the "unstructured" nature of text-delimited files. When you open a comma-delimited file using Microsoft Excel, you'll note two things:

1) If you open up a file which has more than ~65,000 rows in it, the file is truncated since Microsoft Excel can only display roughly 65,000 rows (at least in Excel 2003 and earlier versions)

2) Microsoft Excel must read the entire file to determine the row count and display the data in all of the cell (for larger comma-delimited files, this sometimes can take quite a bit of time).

Strata was built to handle both small files as well as extremely large files (so you won't ever have any truncated comma-delimited files), thus it is impractical for Strata to read through the entire file so it can determine the row count of the file. Our solution was to provide two options for the user:

1) If you'd like to view the file immediately, you can simply open the file using File --> Open. Obviously, this is a nice option which allows you to see the contents of the file immediately, however, it also suffers from the "growing" scrollbar issue -- as you scroll through the file, the scrollbar gripper will get smaller and smaller. Thus, you can only see as much of the file as you have scrolled through.

2) You can go to File --> Import and import the file into the Kirix Strata Project. With this option, you'll be able to scroll to the end of the file immediately, however, you have to endure the import process which can take a bit of time, depending on how large the text-delimited file is.

We hope these two options work well for you. Obviously, it'd be nice to have some sort of third option whereby if a text-delimited file is small enough, Strata reads the whole file and can determine the row count. We're certainly aware of an option like this and would love to be able to provide it at some point in the future.

Hope this helps!
