I don't know if you've noticed this, but there is a solution to use tabs with wxAUI (not perfect, but ... )
There is wxFlatNotebook (an alternative wxNotebook with more features and nice looking tabs with gradients... ) which supports drag and drop. So you can use it like a normal notebook, but you can drag one tab from one wxflatnotebook to another wxflatnotebook. If all your docking windows have wxflatnotebook as the top control, you've almost tab support.
